A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to travel 32 hours from Australia into Jaipur, India for a conference hosted by Stream. My venture capitalist, Richard Webb invited me to what was said to be a un-conferenced conference held annually. After being given less than one weeks’ notice my bags were barely packed and I was out the door. First stop Sydney, to meet with Richard and then off to India I went.
Initially, I had no idea what to expect, from the conference right through to being on a plane within 72 hours of notice and on my way to the other side of the world. I stepped outside of the Jaipur airport 32hrs later at 2 am and my eyes lit up. Where have I taken myself? And what have I done? After exploring all the must-sees and observing Indian culture and practices, I was awed. It was so crazy to see how different it is from Australia. I learned so many truths about the world and met so many unique personalities and experienced such engrained culture with some of the most amazing people.
Arriving at the conference was daunting, to say the least, and I was definitely nervous by the unfamiliarity of it. Jumping between mini-conferences on different points of interest was unusual but I was surprised at the collaborative nature and its effectiveness. The conference became more comfortable as I got a chance to listen to people’s thoughts, passions, and innovations. Connecting to some of the attendees was so inspirational; I met people from all over the Asia Pacific region from Google, LinkedIn into various start-ups all doing amazing things. This definitely broadened my perspective on all things business and personal and gave me insights well respected here at RearViz.
The colour and beauty over there was an awesome culture shock and I appreciate being given this experience and would like to say thank you to Stream for making it happen. Words cannot describe the life-changing experience it has had on my life and perspective.
